INDIANAPOLIS – Though the Wildcats did not receive an at-large team invitation to the 2012 NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Championship, Linfield will still be well-represented through the talents of Abby Olbrich. The senior was one of 32 singles players selected to compete in the individual tournament, as announced Wednesday by the NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Committee.
Olbrich makes her second consecutive appearance at the singles championship. She looks to improve upon her performance from last season, when she suffered an opening-round loss.
It will be another two weeks before Olbrich knows the identity of her first-round opponent this time around, as the draw for the individual championship is released on the last day of the team championship, May 23.
Both the team and individual championships, hosted by Meredith College and the Town of Cary, are held at the Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C. The individual tournament runs May 24-26. Kristim Lim of Clarmont-Mudd-Scripps is the defending singles champion. She and Olbrich faced off in a nonconference match earlier this season, which Kim won by a score of 6-2, 6-1.
Selection of individuals was based on win-loss record, strength of schedule, and eligibility and availability of student-athletes. Olbrich (11-5, 6-4 against regionally-ranked opponents) was one of three tennis players from the Northwest Conference to receive an initiation, along with Whitman’s Alyssa Roberg and Courtney Lawless.
