EUGENE, Ore. – The 192-mile roundtrip was worth the drive for at least three Linfield track and field athletes who set career-best marks at the Oregon Twilight, held Saturday evening at the University of Oregon’s historic Hayward Field.
It was déjà vu for sprinter Melany Crocker (Sr., Milwaukie, Ore.), who broke a day-old personal record in the 200-meter dash, finishing eighth overall in a time of 25.69 seconds. That mark now puts her fourth all-time in Linfield history.
The junior also placed sixth in the 100 (12.40). Teammate Halsie Peek (Soph., Corbett, Ore.) took ninth in the same event, crossing the line in 12.52 seconds.
Misty Corwin demolished her previous best career mark in the pole vault, clearing the bar at 12 feet, 6¾ inches (3.83 meters). Her effort was a 4½-inch improvement upon her personal record, but perhaps more importantly, catapulted her to sixth among all Division III competitors this year. She is now in great position to make the national tournament field, as the 22 women with the top marks receive invitations.
Eric Weinbender was the third Wildcat to set a personal record at the meet, placing 26th in the highly-competitive 1,500-meter run in 4:00.14.
The only other Linfield male representative, Alex Van Slyke, finished 16th in the 3,000-meter run (9:39.56).
Anna LaBeaume (Jr., Sequim, Wash.) placed in the top-15 in a pair of throwing events. She took fourth in the shot put (42-10.25/13.06m) and 13th in the hammer toss (123-05/37.61).
No team scores were comiled at the meet, which featured athletes from all three divisions of the NCAA, the NAIA and numerous track clubs.
COMING UP: Indicative of its name, the George Fox University Final Qualifier Twilight will serve as the last opportunity for Linfield tracksters to qualify for the NCAA Division III Championships, held May 24-26 in Claremont, Calif. The qualifying meet, held at Frank C. Colcord Memorial Field in Newberg, is scheduled for Friday, May 18.
