SALEM, Ore. – Sweeping the top five individual places, the Linfield Wildcats easily won the Willamette Invitational Sunday at Illahe Hills Country Club.
It was Linfield’s third consecutive tournament victory and seventh of the 2011-12 season.
Alex Fitch won his sixth individual medal since September, firing a 72 on the tournament’s second day and a 141 overall score to outdistance the field by 14 strokes. Fith was the only golfer to shoot below par. His first-day score of 69 was the low round for the tournment.
Teammate A.J. Taylor (Jr., Kirkland, Wash.) was runner-up, carding a 154 overall score, 76 on the second day. Linfield’s Tommy Schmitz (Jr., Gresham, Ore.) was third at 156 while Taylor Klopp (Soph., Eugene, Ore.) and Connor Magnuson (Soph., Albany, Ore.) shared fourth place at 157.
Linfield shot 300-302-602 for the tournament, besting second place George Fox’s score of 315-326-641. Willamette was third at 661 while the Linfield ‘B’ team scored a 665.
AHEAD: The Wildcats head to Canyon Lakes Golf Course in Kennewick, Wash., for the Northwest Conference Championship tournament. Linfield is the defending team champion and Fitch is the defending medalist. The tournament counts 50 percent toward the 2011-12 team champion.
