An 8-6 result at No. 1 singles by Cody Levien and Zach Lyons provided a measure of satisfaction during the Linfield Wildcats’ season-ending loss to Pacific Saturday at Hulce Courts.
The Boxers won the match 8-1 to clinch second place in the Northwest Conference’s regular-season point standings. Pacific will face No. 3 seed George Fox at the four-team NWC playoff tournament, Saturday and Sunday at Walla Walla, Wash.
For the Wildcats, Levien and Lyons fashioned the road victory over one of the conference’s better duos on the Boxers’ Senior Day. The Linfield tandem knocked of Pacific’s Troy Zuroske and Spencer Hing in the leading flight.
“Zach and Cody have put together an all-conference season in doubles and they finished the season on a high note today,” said Wildcats coach Carl Swanson.
A day earlier, Linfield battled Puget Sound tooth and nail before falling 5-4 in Tacoma, Wash.
The Loggers swept the Wildcats in the three doubles matches before Linfield stormed back to capture four of the six singles pairings.
Lyons topped UPS’s Ben Miller 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1 singles and Levien carved out a 6-3, 6-2 decision over the Loggers’ George Murphy at No. 3. Other winners included Luke Kleinman at No. 5 and Ben Brewer (Soph., Lake Oswego, Ore.) at No. 6.
Linfield ended its season in seventh place in the NWC point standings. The Wildcats won two matches, both in conference play, ending the season at 2-18 overall and 2-10 in the NWC.
