ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Outshooting its foe by a 2-1 margin, Linfield snapped a 12-match losing skid in impressive fashion, scoring a 21-10 victory over Fontbonne Tuesday evening on the Griffins’ home field.
Mariah Jones scored five goals and tallied a Linfield single-match record seven assists for the Wildcats (1-4), who broke free from their losing yoke that had saddled the team for two seasons. Fontbonne, which provided Linfield's most recent victory last season in McMinnville, dropped to 0-6 for the season.
Zooey Spring also totaled five goals while adding and assist. Taylor Fisher worked her way through the Fontbonne defense for five assists and four goals as Linfield built a 14-6 halftime advantage.
The Wildcats jumped on the Griffins early, outshooting the hosts 25-12 during the opening 30 minutes. Linfield led 4-1 with 8:20 gone after Spring’s second goal, and opened up an 8-3 advantage after Jones and Spring combined for a goal midway through the period.
Linfield goalkeeper Tori Kraft was called on to make just three saves, thanks in part to 16 Fontbonne turnovers. Lisa Ekstrom totaled three caused turnovers and two ground balls, Megan Kearns picked up five ground balls and caused two turnovers, and Chas Tittle (Soph., Mililani, Hawaii) had three ground balls to go with a pair of caused turnovers.
COMING UP: Linfield returns to Oregon to host Whittier Thursday in the final home contest of the season. Action starts at 5 p.m.
