TACOMA, Wash. – Abby Olbrich won her 50th career doubles match to lead the Linfield women’s tennis team to an easy 8-1 victory over Puget Sound Saturday afternoon at the Puget Sound Tennis Pavilion.
The Wildcats won their seventh consecutive contest to remain undefeated at 7-0, all Northwest Conference matches. The Loggers, meanwhile, drop to 3-6, including 3-5 in the NWC.
Olbrich’s milestone victory came at No. 1 doubles, where she partnered with Caroline Brigham (Sr., Eagle, Idaho) to top Josephine Dow and Maddison Holtz 8-3.
The Nip sisters – Kiana and Kaila – remain undefeated after an 8-2 victory over Logan Thompson and Marissa Friedman in the middle doubles flight. Kelly Watanabe (Jr., Kirkland, Wash.) and Lexi Thomas withstood a good challenge from Ada Yu and Maddie Thiesse, but outlasted their Logger counterparts 8-5.
After a clean sweep of doubles play, the ‘Cats went on to win five of six singles flights to secure the victory.
Olbrich blanked Holtz 6-0, 6-0 as Brigham turned away Jenna Gerdsen 6-3, 6-0. Kaila Nip (Jr., Lahaina, Hawaii) defeated Thiesse 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 singles and older sister Kiana Nip also picked up a victory at No. 5 singles over Friedman by a score of 6-3, 6-0.
Watanabe wrapped up singles action with her 6-4, 6-4 win over Dow.
The Loggers’ Thompson claimed the sole victory for the home team at No. 4 singles, defeating Thomas 6-4, 6-4.
'CAT SCRATCH: Olbrich is now one of 10 Linfield women's tennis players to achieve 50 or more doubles victories...in addition to boasting an undefeated record in doubles at 7-0, the Nip sisters are also each undefeated in singles play.
NEXT: Linfield is idle until Friday when the Wildcats host Pacific in a 3 p.m. matchup in McMinnville. The ‘Cats won the first contest between the clubs, 9-0, back in February.
