McMINNVILLE, Ore. – A sweep of three doubles matches proved pivotal in a 6-3 Northwest Conference victory by the Linfield Wildcats over the Lewis & Clark Pioneers Saturday afternoon inside Rutschman Fieldhouse.
The Wildcats evened their NWC record at 1-1 and 1-2 overall. Lewis & Clark moved to 0-2, both overall and in conference play.
Linfield’s No. 1 doubles tandem of Zach Lyons and Cody Levien carved out an 8-4 win over L&C’s Oliver Groot and Quinn Roth-Carter. Wildcat freshmen Micah Roos (Soph., Port Angeles, Wash.) and Luke Kleinman defeated Scott Monismith and Carter Gee-Taylor 8-4 in the No. 2 flight, while Ben Brewer (Soph., Lake Oswego, Ore.) and Joel Trousdale (Soph., Hillsboro, Ore.) knocked off the Pioneers’ Christian Stanbrook and Lucas Fodor 8-5 at No. 3.
“There were a lot of young new players on the court today for both teams,” said Wildcats coach Carl Swanson. “Obviously, getting off to a good start in doubles was the difference because at the end of the day we split the singles matches.”
Winning singles matches for Linfield were Lyons at No. 2, Roos at No. 3, and Kleinman at No. 4. Lyons won 6-2, 6-2 over Roth-Carter. Roos scored a 6-0, 6-1 straight-sets victory over Gee-Taylor, and Kleinman was a 6-2, 6-1 winner over Monismith. All three Wildcats improved their season singles records to 2-1.
COMING UP: Linfield is on the road for its next two contests. Friday, the Wildcats visit NWC rival Pacific Lutheran at 3:30 p.m., then head to Willamette on Saturday for a 3 o’clock showdown with the Bearcats.
