McMINNVILLE, Ore. – With a clean sweep in doubles, the George Fox Bruins scored their most decisive victory over the Linfield Wildcats in many seasons, dropping the ‘Cats 8-1 Friday night in a Norhwest Conference match inside Rutschman Fieldhouse.
The loss dropped Linfield to 0-2 for the season, 0-1 in NWC action. George Fox, with more matches under its belt, improved to 2-3 and evened its conference ledger at 1-1.
Linfield’s lone point came at No. 1 doubles, where the Wildcats two most experienced players, Cody Levien and Zach Lyons, scored an 8-4 win over the GFU pairing of Peter Brown and Justin McClain.
George Fox led the match 2-1 heading to singles after the Bruins’ Shawn Aldrich and David Munoz took down Micah Roos (Jr., Port Angeles, Wash.) and Luke Kleinman 8-4 at No. 2 doubles, and GFU’s Preston Mann and Drew Milton silenced first-year starters Ben Brewer (Jr., Lake Oswego, Ore.) and Joel Trousdale, 8-0, at No. 3.
Mann outlasted Levien at No. 1 singles, 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 in the closest of the six individual flights. Aldrich earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Lyons at No. 2, and McClain blanked Roos, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3.
In the lower flights, Milton topped Kleinman 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4, Munoz beat Brewer 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5, and Brown prevailed 6-0, 6-1 over Trousdale at No. 6.
“Zach and Cody did what they needed to do and got the job done in doubles. Cody fought an up-and-down battle in singles,” said Wildcats coach Carl Swanson.
The teams split last season’s home-and-home series, with the Bruins shocking the Wildcats 5-4 in McMinnville before Linfield answered with a 7-2 win on the GFU courts.
