McMINNVILLE, Ore. – Linfield cakewalked through its first test of Northwest Conference women’s tennis action Friday afternoon, soundly defeating Pacific 9-0 at the Linfield Tennis Center.

The Wildcats (1-0, 1-0 NWC) swept through doubles play with ease before winning all six singles flights, four of them in straight sets.

Abby Olbrich and Caroline Brigham (Jr., Eagle, Idaho) topped the Boxers’ (1-1, 0-1 NWC) Cat Goya and Megan Yoshimoto 8-3 in the top doubles match. Sisters Kaila and Kiana Nip bested Lily Do and Kelsey Trujillo 8-3 and Kelly Watanabe (Soph., Kirkland, Wash.) and Lexi Thomas (Sr., Redding, Calif.) finished things off with an 8-2 decision over Rachel Mizuno and Amber Craviotto.

Olbrich and Thomas survived the two closest singles matches of the day, winning at No. 1 and No. 3, respectively. After dropping the first set, Olbrich stormed back to defeat Goya 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. Thomas also had to dig out from an early hole and outlasted Mizuno in an extended third set, 6-7 (2), 6-0, 10-7.

Brigham extended her win streak in NWC matches to 11, dating back to last season, with a 6-0, 7-5 win over Yoshimoto at N0. 2 singles. Kaila Nip (Soph., Lahaina, Hawaii) defeated Trujillo 6-4, 6-1 as sister Kiana nearly blanked her opponent, Do, by a score of 6-2, 6-1. Watanabe ensured the sweep with her 6-2, 6-2 victory over Craviotto.
