McMINNVILLE, Ore. – Freshman Andrew Batiuk (Soph., Tualatin, Ore.) scored 20 of his game-high 30 points in the first half and Linfield withstood a 3-point shooting barrage by Multnomah to defeat the visiting Lions 100-86 Monday night.
Zach Anderson notched a double-double with 27 points and 14 rebounds for the Wildcats, who ended a four-game winless drought. Zach Meikle (Sr., Tacoma, Wash.) came off the bench to add 12 points and six rebounds.
Linfield shot 60 percent from the field and a season-best 84 percent from the free throw line. Anderson was a spotless 10-of-10 at the line while Batiuk made all four of his attempts.
The Wildcats’ high percentages helped offset Multnomah’s 17 successful 3-pointers. Gian Cook and Tyler Yates each had five threes in the loss.
The nonconference victory raised the Wildcats’ record to 2-5 for the season. The Lions of Northeast Portland saw their record drop to 8-7.
A high-scoring first half featured nine lead changes before Linfield surged in front over the final three minutes to take a 50-44 advantage into the break.
Multnomah hit nine 3-pointers in the period, including a trio of long balls from Yates, who finished with 20 points.
Batiuk, a 6-foot-9 center, hit 8-of-10 shots in the first half, including a pair of threes and ended the game 12-of-14. He added five rebounds and two assists in his best performance of the season.
The second half was all Linfield as the ‘Cats outscored the Lions 50-42 to reach the century mark.
Cook, who set the Multnomah single-game scoring record earlier this season with 61 points, totaled 24. David Walker and Steven Bustrin each contributed 10 points.
