KIRKLAND, Wash. – Showing no signs of a “Thanksgiving hangover,” Northwest University led from start to finish en route to a lopsided 83-63 men’s basketball victory over the visiting Linfield Wildcats Friday evening at NU Pavilion.
The undefeated Eagles, who compete in the NAIA’s Cascade Conference, ran their record to 8-0 with the win. Linfield’s record now stands at 1-3 after losing its second consecutive game.
Northwest raced out to an 8-0 lead before a Michael Moreland layup finally put the visiting Wildcats on the scoreboard at the 16:37 mark of the opening period. But there was no stopping the Eagles, who hit 17-of-41 shots (41.5 percent) on their way to doubling Linfield’s score by the halftime break at 44-22.
The halftime intermission did little to cool Northwest, which was even better in the second period. Sinking 51.7 percent of their field goal attempts, the Eagles saw their lead swell to 35 points on a 3-point basket by Jordan Call with 8:52 remaining in the game.
With reserves from both teams seeing the floor for the rest of the game, the ‘Cats cut into the lead to make the final scoring gap a more respectable 20 points.
The home Eagles were led by Call’s 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting. Tyler Mendezona added 11 and Jason Waltman secured a game-high 11 rebounds. For the game, Northwest out-boarded the ‘Cats 50-27.
Zach Anderson scored a game-high 22 points and also registered four of Linfield’s seven blocks in a losing effort. Josh Rodrigues contributed a season-high 12 points as well as a team-high five rebounds.
NEXT: Northwest Conference action begins Tuesday evening when the ‘Cats travel to Forest Grove for a matchup against Pacific. Linfield then returns home Saturday night for a home game against Pacific Lutheran. Both games begin at 8 p.m.
