Linfield's Playoff History
Unbeaten Linfield will host Cal Lutheran Saturday, Nov. 19, at noon at Maxwell Field. Ranked fifth in both the American Football Coaches Association and d3football.com poll, the Wildcats (9-0) qualified for the NCAA Division III playoffs for the third straight season. California Lutheran, currently ranked eighth, is making its third-straight NCAA playoff appearance.
Linfield earned its 35th Northwest Conference championship Saturday with a 47-14 rout of Lewis & Clark. The Wildcats are rematched against the Kingsmen in the first round of the 32-team playoffs. Cal Lutheran, whose only defeat in 2011 came in the season opener at Linfield, went 6-0 in the Southern California Intercollegiate Conference, winning its second outright league championship.
Linfield is the lone Northwest Conference team to qualify for the NCAA playoffs. The Wildcats are competing in the NCAA playoffs for the eighth time since 2000 and including NAIA playoffs, are appearing in the postseason for the 23rd time in program history.
The other pairings on Linfield’s corner of the bracket include Redlands at Mary Hardin-Baylor, McMurry at Trinity, and Hobart at Wesley.
Riding a 17-game regular-season win streak dating to last season, Linfield completed an undefeated regular season for the seventh time since 2000 and 19th time in its history.
Linfield and Cal Lutheran have met six times previously with the Wildcats winning four. The two teams have squared off in McMinnville in the first round of the NCAA playoffs each of past two seasons, with Linfield winning both times.
The first two meetings of the fiercely competitive series came during the playoffs when both were members of the NAIA. The Kingsmen won a 1977 playoff game at Thousand Oaks, Calif., before the Wildcats prevailed 20-16 in a 1982 first-round game at McMinnville on their way to the college’s first national championship in football.
