Linfield’s Christian Hanna and Tyler Steele (Sr., Salem, Ore.) have been recognized for their high academic successes by being named to the 2011 CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-District Football Team, as announced Thursday.
Hanna, a senior cornerback, carries a 3.73 cumulative GPA while majoring in exercise science. He is now a two-time academic all-district honoree; he was also named to the first team for District VIII last season.
On the football field, Hanna has played in all eight games, starting six. His 21 total tackles rank ninth on the team, and he is the only Wildcat to return an interception for a touchdown, a 33-yard score against Puget Sound.
Steele, a junior defensive tackle and physical education major, has maintained a 3.69 cumulative GPA.
He has started all eight games, totaling 34 tackles, third-most for the Wildcats this year, and a league-leading 10 sacks. He has recorded at least one sack in every game this year.
The two defensive standouts have helped lead Linfield to an unblemished 8-0 record, including 5-0 in the Northwest Conference. The ‘Cats lead the league in defense, allowing just 11.4 points per game.
As first team selections, Hanna and Steele both advance to the All-America ballot, where honorees will be selected later this month.
The CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-America program was established in the 1950s, and every year recognizes hundreds of deserving scholar-athletes. Student-athletes are nominated by their respective institutions. Voting for Academic All-District is done by current members of the Collegiate Sports Information Directors of America; the All-America team is voted upon by Academic All-America Committee members and current CoSIDA Board of Directors.
