Though the Linfield women’s soccer team was not invited to compete in the NCAA tournament, the ‘Cats have one more thing to celebrate with the announcement that Anna Sours (Sr., Jacksonville, Ore.) has been selected to the 2011 CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-District Women’s Soccer Team in recognition for her successes both on the field and in the classroom.
Sours, who was selected to the first team for Division III, carries a 3.96 cumulative GPA in sociology. This is her second academic honor; she was named to the CoSIDA/ESPN Academic All-District third team a season ago.
The junior midfielder was one of five players to start all 20 matches for the Wildcats this season, totaling four goals – including two game-winners – and a team-leading five assists.
In three years at Linfield, Sours has netted 16 goals and contributed seven assists while starting 59 of 60 matches. She is a two-time all-Northwest Conference selection, garnering first team honors as a freshman and receiving honorable mention consideration as a sophomore.
Linfield finished second in the Northwest Conference this season, the highest-ever program finish, with a 14-3-3 overall record and 11-2-3 win-loss mark in league matches. The ‘Cats set single-season program records for wins (14) and shutouts (10). On the conference level, the club ranked third in the NWC with goals scored (35) and defensively, finished second in goals allowed (15).
As a first team honoree for District 8, Sours advances to the All-America ballot, where honorees will be selected later this month.
The CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-America program was established in the 1950s, and every year recognizes hundreds of deserving scholar-athletes. Student-athletes are nominated by their respective institutions. Voting for Academic All-District is done by current members of the Collegiate Sports Information Directors of America; the All-America team is voted upon by Academic All-America Committee members and current CoSIDA Board of Directors.
