ALOHA, Ore. – Poor weather caused Linfield’s team score to swell, but the bubble did not pop for the Wildcats, who maintained their position in third place at the conclusion of Sunday’s second round of the Culturame Classic at The Reserve Vineyards Golf Course.
Individually, Hannah Christian was the top finisher for Linfield with a two-day total score of 77-86=163 was 17 strokes over par. She moved past teammate Brinn Hovde (Sr., Bellingham, Wash.) to finish in a tie for 11th place.
Hovde slipped from fifth to 13th place (tied) after shooting 90 over the second 18 holes, totaling 165 strokes (75-90=165).
Lydia Smith was one of two Linfield golfers to improve upon her first-round score. She carded a season-best 84 on day two, the lowest round of the day for the Wildcats, to finish with a total of 91-84=175, good for 20th place.
Hawai’i-Hilo successfully defended its tournament title. The Vulcans, who compete in Division II, extended their lead over the field from 16 to 23 strokes to finish with a two-day combined total of 299-302=601, 17 strokes over par.
Dayna Bersamin of Hawai’i-Hilo was the individual medalist. She was the only player to score under par, carding a one-under 72 on the second day to finish with a total score of 74-72=146. She defeated teammate Kristen Sawada, who held the lead after 18 holes, by four strokes.
Placing second in the team standings was George Fox (315-309=624), followed by Linfield (329-351-680), Biola (341-355=696), Willamette (362-355=717), Northwest Christian (362-356=719) and Pacific (372-385=757). Lewis & Clark and Simpson (Calif.) both sent individual players but did not compile a team score.
Alexandia Smith and Danielle Lungren rounded out the top-five players for Linfield. Smith finished with a two-day total of 86-91=177 to place 21st (tied) and Lungren improved her first-round score by four strokes to finish 30th with a final score of 96-92=188.
COMING UP: The Wildcats conclude the fall season with the NWC Fall Classic. The two-day tournament takes place Saturday and Sunday at Heron Lakes Golf Course in Portland.
