SEGUIN, Texas – Libero Samantha Lau earned all-tournament honors while pacing the Linfield Wildcats to a pair of wins at the Bulldog Classic tournament hosted by Texas Lutheran University.
Linfield lost its two opening-day matches Friday but bounced back for two victories the following day. The Wildcats evened their season record at 4-4 heading into this week’s Northwest Conference counters at Willamette and at Puget Sound.
Gallaudet def. Linfield 25-15, 25-23, 25-20
Linfield was listless on offense, hitting .074. Freshmen Kailana Ritte-Camara (Soph., Molokai, Hawaii) and Victoria Thompson (Soph., Newberg, Ore.) combined for nine kills, but the rest of the Wildcats accounted for only eight additional kills. Cora Hall totaled 10 assists and Lau registered a dozen digs.
Serving and passing were the Wildcats’ undoing. Linfield committed 10 service errors while picking up just four aces and were whistled for seven ball-handing errors.
Texas Lutheran def. Linfield 21-25, 25-19, 25-13, 25-18
The ‘Cats put together one of their most efficient offensive sets of the season, hitting .265 on the way to a 25-21 win. After committing just five errors in the first frame, Linfield piled up 30 more over the final three stanzas, enabling the host Bulldogs to take the match in four sets.
Ritte-Camara had 10 kills while hitting .296 and Bethany Dickey (Sr., Sheridan, Ore.) and Kelsey Ludin (Jr., Bozeman, Mont.) contributed six kills each. Ritte-Camara pitched in with 13 digs, Hall and Audrey Frazier (Soph., Albany, Ore.) both notched season highs with 17 assists apiece, and Stephanie Newman chipped in with four block assists, four aces and three kills.
Linfield def. Concordia-Texas 25-16, 21-25, 25-23, 17-25, 15-5
Newman and Ritte-Camara both came up big with eight kills, Dickey totaled seven and the Wildcats won the fifth set decisively. Lau was all over the floor, digging up a season-high 37 balls while adding four of the Wildcats’ 12 service aces. Frazier piloted the offense with 18 assists to go along with 10 digs.
Linfield def. LeTourneau 29-27, 25-19, 25-15
The Wildcats kept the Yellow Jackets winless (0-9), rolling to the three-set sweep in the final match of the Bulldog Classic.
Leimomi Hookano (Soph., Kaneohe, Hawaii) and Ritte-Camara combined for 16 kills, Thompson added six more, and the Wildcats hit a season-best .188 at the net.
Ludin had three block assists, Lau totaled 27 digs and Frazier and Hall combined for 28 assists.
AHEAD: Linfield visits Willamette Wednesday night starting at 7 inside Cone Fieldhouse. The ‘Cats then head to Tacoma, Wash., for a Saturday night contest at Puget Sound’s Memorial Fieldhouse.
