CLAREMONT, Calif. – Linfield all-star Abby Olbrich made her first career appearance at the NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Championships held in Claremont, Calif. Unfortunately, the experience was short-lived as she was eliminated in a first-round loss Friday morning.

Olbrich faced Jennifer Kung of the University of Chicago in the opening round of 32. The junior Maroon player defeated her Wildcat counterpart by a score of 6-3, 6-3.

Despite the loss, Olbrich can take solace in knowing that her match was actually one of the more closely contested of the day. Several other participants were shut out or lost by substantial margins, including Willamette rival Natalia Agarycheva, who lost her opening-round match to Bowdoin’s Kellen Albertstone 6-0, 6-1.

Olbrich concludes the year with a 13-7 singles record. She was an all-Northwest Conference selection for the third consecutive year, and helped the Linfield club win the NWC tournament and advance to the second round of the NCAA national team championships.

Kung moves on to the round of 16, where she will face Julia Browne of Tufts University. Browne is the defending singles champion. The single-elimination national tournament concludes Saturday.
