LEWISTON, Idaho - Brian Gaylord tallied two hits, including a two-run home run and No. 12 Lewis & Clark State benefitted from four unearned runs to clip No. 3 Linfield 6-3 Friday evening in the opening day of the Inland Cellular Tournament.
The NAIA Warriors snap a five-game Linfield win streak, improving to 35-13 on the season. The Wildcats drop to 29-9 with the loss.
LCSC took an early 3-0 lead with three unearned runs in the bottom of the third inning. After Kevin Lovelace reached on an error to open the inning, Aaron DeGuire scored Lovelace on an RBI single to center field.
Two batters later Gaylord drilled the first pitch over the right field fence, giving the Warriors a 3-0 advantage.
After being shutout by LCSC starter Tyrel Poggemeyer for the first five innings, the Wildcats broke through for three runs in the top of the sixth.
Eric Evenson led off the inning with a hit into center field. Following an out, Tim Wilson (Jr., Redmond, Wash.) singled, putting runners on the corners. Evenson and Wilson would later score on RBI singles from Cole Bixenman and Nate McClellan (Jr., Shoreline, Wash.).
With two outs and Bixenman on third, Kevin Allan dropped a drag bunt down the third base line. Bixenman scored on the play by avoiding a tag attempt by DeGuire.
The Warriors added a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh. A Linfield error to start the inning led to another unearned run. In the bottom of the eighth Braxton Miller put LCSC up 6-3 with a solo homer.
Zach Arneson picked up the win for the Warriors, pitching three shutout innings to close out the game. Ryan Larson pitched six innings for the ‘Cats, giving up three runs, all of which unearned.
Evenson led the Wildcats with two hits and one run scored. McClellan was 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Gaylord was one of three Warriors with two hits.
