McMINNVILLE, Ore. – Linfield’s Zach Brandon (Jr., Cottage Grove, Ore.) has been named Northwest Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Week for his part in helping the third-ranked ‘Cats sweep Pacific Lutheran on the last weekend of league play. The honor was announced Tuesday by the conference’s sports information directors.
On Saturday, Brandon pitched eight scoreless innings in Linfield’s 3-0 win over PLU in the second contest of the three-game series. He gave up just five hits (all singles) and two walks. The freshman also struck out three and held the Lutes to a .185 batting average.
On the season, Brandon boasts a 1.64 ERA and has given up 26 hits leading to six earned runs. He has tallied 17 strikeouts over 33 innings, and has a perfect 4-0 record, plus two saves, in eight total appearances on the mound.
He becomes the fifth Linfield player to receive the weekly honor this season, but the first pitcher.
The Wildcats, the No. 3 club in the nation according to the most recent d3baseball.com poll, wrapped up their second-straight Northwest Conference championship, their third title in four seasons. In addition to claiming the league’s top record at 20-4 (29-8 overall), the team also led the conference in team pitching with a 2.55 ERA and 255 strikeouts.
In winning the NWC title, the 'Cats earned a spot in the NCAA Division III Baseball Championship for the second consecutive year. The date, location and opponent for regional competition will be announced on or around May 15.
NEXT: Linfield concludes the regular season with a three-game road trip to Lewiston, Idaho to take on nonconference opponent Lewis-Clark State and conference foes Pacific Lutheran and George Fox. The first game, against host Lewis-Clark State, is scheduled for Friday at 6 p.m.
