SALEM, Ore. – Linfield won a matchup of regionally-ranked opponents and completed the season sweep of the Willamette women’s tennis squad with a 7-2 victory Friday afternoon at the WU Tennis Courts.
The Wildcats, ranked ninth in the West Region, improve to 13-4 and 11-1 in the Northwest Conference. The No. 13 Bearcats run their record to 9-6 overall and 6-5 in the league.
Linfield swept all three doubles flights with relative ease. The No. 1 tandem of Abby Olbrich and Sarah Click, ranked 10th in the region, upset fourth-ranked Natalia Agarycheva and Shannon Palmer 8-2. Sophie Larson and Caroline Brigham (Jr., Eagle, Idaho) teamed to knock off Fabi Dieguez and Jamie Slonaker, also by a score of 8-2.
The third match was tight, but Kiana Nip and Lexi Thomas (Sr., Redding, Calif.) escaped Emily Bee and Emily Funabiki 9-7.
Agarycheva got the best of Olbrich in singles play, defeating the Wildcat’s top player in a super tiebreaker 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-8). Dieguez got the other win for the Bearcats with her 6-3, 6-3 victory over Thomas at No. 3 singles.
Linfield swept the remaining singles flights to secure the match victory. No. 2 player Larson won the day’s second super tiebreaker against Palmer by a score of 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-8). Brigham improved to 12-2 on the season by defeating Bee 6-0, 6-1. Click blanked Willamette’s Slonaker 6-0, 6-0 and Sarah Watanabe won the final match over Lindsay Michaelson by a score of 6-0, 7-5.
NEXT: The Wildcats, who finished second in the conference, compete in the league tournament Saturday and Sunday at Whitworth.
