McMINNVILLE, Ore. – Mark Magdaong won his 51st career singles match and Linfield blanked Lewis & Clark 9-0 in men’s tennis Friday at the Linfield Tennis Center.
Magdaong, winner of four straight singles matches and eight of his last 10, moved into a tie with Chris Rivera for the most singles victories in Wildcat history. He reached the historic plateau by beating the Pioneers’ George Allen in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.
The match win was an important one for the Wildcats (6-7, 5-6 NWC), who need to win their regular-season finale against Willamette to clinch the fourth and final conference tournament berth. The Pioneers remain winless during the 2011 campaign at 0-13 overall and 0-9 in league action.
"We now have season-series wins over Puget Sound, Pacific Lutheran, George Fox, and Lewis & Clark and we’ve put ourselves in position to advance to the NWC Championships," said Wildcats coach Carl Swanson. "After some tough close matches, we’ve fought hard to get back into contention, so I’m very proud of my team and I look forward to the opportunity to play Willamette and finish with a shot at the title."
Other victories for Linfield in singles play came from Tal DeWitt and Brent Kingzett in the No. 2 and No. 3 flights, respectively. DeWitt topped Quinn Roth-Carter 6-1, 6-0 and Kingzett blanked Kerry White 6-0, 6-0.
Tim Wagar, playing at the No. 4 position for the first time all season, earned a 6-0, 6-1 decision over Sam Franer. Zachery Lyons (Sr., Vancouver, Wash.) crushed Muneeb Khan 6-0, 6-0 and Matthew Hipperson rounded out singles play with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Gabriel Trepanier.
The Wildcats were just as dominant in doubles play, sweeping all three flights by impressive margins.
