McMINNVILLE, Ore. – Linfield posted its highest-scoring match yet this season with a 14-10 victory over visiting Fontbonne Sunday afternoon at the Linfield lacrosse field.
The ‘Cats improve to 1-2 on the season as the Griffins, of St. Louis, Mo., run their record to 2-4.
The opening half was tight, as Linfield and Fontbonne traded goals and the lead.
With the score knotted up at 5-5 about halfway through the first period, the ‘Cats took the lead on a goal from Anna Gorciak. But the Griffins immediately responded with a score of their own as Carolann Brenzo slipped one by Linfield netminder Hayley Steele.
The Wildcats went ahead for good on Gorciak’s third goal with 12:39 left in the half.
Linfield put the game away with two quick goals to open the second period. The ‘Cats outscored the Griffins 6-4 after the break to secure the win.
In addition to four goals from Gorciak, the Wildcats got three scores from Mariah Jones and two each from Taylor Fisher, Shelby Duarte (Soph., San Ramon, Calif.) and Monique Schreiber. Fisher also had a game-high two assists.
The ‘Cats pounded Fontbonne goalie Claire Kallio with a season-high 32 shots.
Defensively, freshman goalie Steele weathered 24 shots to pick up her first career victory.
For the Griffins, Mary Alice Price recorded a game-high five goals.
NEXT: The ‘Cats host North Central of Illinois in a 1 p.m. Monday.
