Linfield tops La Verne

LA VERNE, Calif. – Sophie Larson and Sarah Click hit a pair of individual milestones to help the Linfield women’s tennis club earn a 7-2 nonconference win over La Verne Saturday at the Upland Tennis Club.

Larson registered her 50th career singles victory by defeating Tarika Krishnamurthy 6-3, 6-4 in the No. 2 singles flight. Click racked up her 40th career win with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Allison Moncrief.

The Wildcats won three of the four remaining singles matches and two of three doubles flights to secure the victory.

At No. 1 singles, Abby Olbrich topped Lila Luna 6-3, 6-1. Caroline Brigham (Jr., Eagle, Idaho) crushed Valerie Lezin 6-2, 6-0 and Sarah Watanabe defeated Arielle Monteilh 6-2, 6-1.

The Leopards picked up one point in singles play at the No. 3 slot as Jessenia Garcia narrowly edged Lexi Thomas (Sr., Redding, Calif.) 6-4, 6-3.

In doubles play, Olbrich and Click teamed to defeat Luna and Krishnamurthy 8-1. The No. 2 Linfield tandem of Larson and Brigham earned an 8-3 decision over Moncrief and Lezin 8-3.

La Verne recorded the No. 3 doubles win as Garcia and Justine Ledesma prevailed over Thomas and Kiana Nip 8-3.

With the win, the Wildcats improve to 8-4 overall and remain at 6-1 in the Northwest Conference. The Leopards, who compete in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, drop to 4-6 on the season.

NEXT: Linfield hosts Puget Sound in a 4 p.m. match Friday afternoon.
