REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands did not extend a warm welcome to the visiting Linfield women’s tennis club, dealing the Wildcats a crushing 8-1 defeat Friday afternoon at Verdieck Courts.
The Bulldogs, who compete in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and are ranked sixth in the West Region, improve to 6-3 overall. The ‘Cats, ranked ninth in the region, run their win-loss total to 7-4.
Sarah Watanabe supplied the sole victory for Linfield, winning her No. 6 singles flight over Katherine Guimapang by a score of 6-3, 4-6, 6-0.
Redlands topped Linfield in the remaining singles matches. The No. 1 flight featured two regionally-ranked opponents in Abby Olbrich (8) and Rachael Miller (13). The match lived up to the hype, as it went to three sets before Miller won 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
In other singles action, Jessica Ly handily defeated Sophie Larson 6-1, 6-2. At the No. 3 and 4 flights, Sarah Yoshinaga topped Lexi Thomas (Sr., Redding, Calif.) and Paige Press triumphed over Caroline Brigham (Jr., Eagle, Idaho), both by a score of 7-6, 6-2. Julia Galbraith and Sarah Click battled through three sets, which Galbraith won by a score of 4-6, 6-1, 10-6.
The Bulldogs swept all three doubles matches. The tandem of Miller and Yoshinaga earned an 8-6 decision over Olbrich and Click. Ly and Galbraith prevailed over Brigham and Larson 8-5. In the final flight, Press and Amanda Alvarez defeated Thomas and Kiana Nip 8-5.
NEXT: The ‘Cats take on another nonconference opponent, competing at La Verne Saturday morning. Match time is set for 10 a.m.
