McMINNVILLE, Ore. – Sydney Whitaker and Desirae Murphy combined for 10 goals to lead visiting Carthage over Linfield 20-7 Thursday afternoon at the Linfield lacrosse field.
The Lady Reds (1-3) of Kenosha, Wis., avenged a 16-14 loss to the Wildcats last year and picked up their first win of the current season. The Wildcats, meanwhile, drop to 0-2.
Carthage broke open a 3-3 tie midway through the first half, scoring five unanswered goals. A Monique Schreiber goal helped Linfield pull to within four, but the Lady Reds responded with two more scores, including one as the halftime buzzer sounded.
At the break, Linfield found itself down but not out, facing a deficit of 10-4.
The window of opportunity did not stay open long, however. After a quick Linfield goal less than two minutes into the second half, the Lady Reds poured it on, adding four straight scores to stretch their lead to 14-5.
Carthage got off 39 shots to Linfield’s 17. Goalie Hayley Steele made nine saves but picked up the loss.
Offensively, Anna Gorciak supplied two goals and one assist for the Wildcats. Taylor Fisher added one goal and set up another score.
NEXT: The ‘Cats host three more out-of-state opponents over three days. Fontbonne (Missouri) comes to town for a 4 p.m. match Sunday. Linfield then plays North Central (Illinois) Monday and Plymouth State (New Hampshire) Tuesday.
