McMINNVILLE, Ore. – Linfield snapped a two-game losing streak with a 7-2 nonconference win over Hardin-Simmons Tuesday afternoon at the Linfield Tennis Center.
The Wildcats (7-3, 6-1 NWC) claimed five of six singles victories and swept two of three doubles flights to get the win over the Cowboys (7-5).
No. 1 Abby Olbrich topped Lisa Mertz 7-6 (6-4), 6-4. Hardin-Simmons’ Lauren Jay posted the only singles win for the visitors with a 6-3, 6-3 decision over Lexi Thomas (Sr., Redding, Calif.).
Sophie Larson won in straight sets, defeating Jennifer Cheung 6-4, 6-3. At the No. 4 position, Sarah Click fought back from an early deficit to beat Angie Nhan 4-6, 6-1, 10-2. Caroline Brigham (Jr., Eagle, Idaho) claimed the greatest margin of victory on the day, crushing Danielle Cochran 6-1, 6-0. Down early, Sarah Watanabe rallied to defeat Alex Ortiz 1-6, 6-1, 10-8 in the final singles match.
The ‘Cats started out the contest by winning the top two doubles flights.
Click and Olbrich narrowly defeated Mertz and Cheung 9-7 and the No. 2 tandem of Larson and Brigham soundly toppled Jay and Ortiz 8-1.
The Cowgirls picked up their second point of the match courtesy of a Cochran and Nhan victory over Watanabe and Thomas by the score of 8-5.
Hardin-Simmons, hailing from Abilene, Texas, went winless in its trip out west. The Cowgirls, who compete in the American Southwest Conference, lost to George Fox Monday, and suffered a defeat to Willamette earlier Tuesday.
NEXT: The Wildcats are headed for warmer weather, embarking on a two-match trip to California. Linfield takes on Redlands Friday at 2 p.m. and La Verne the next day at 10 a.m. Both are nonconference contests.
