LAKEWOOD, Wash. – Battling harsh weather as well as a challenging Oakwood Golf and Country Club course, Linfield shot a collective score of 314 and holds a five-stroke lead over Pacific Lutheran (319), and Puget Sound (323) after Sunday's first round at the Pacific Lutheran Invitational.
Individually, there’s a four-player standoff for the top overall score. Alex Fitch and Josh Kay of Linfield stand tied with Andrew Kunitomo of Pacific Lutheran and Derek Wilson of Puget Sound, all with first-round scores of 77.
PLU's Scott Zhang is alone in fifth place with a 78, followed by Linfield's A.J. Taylor (Jr., Kirkland, Wash.) at 79. Rounding out the top 10 are Greg Kirkpatrick, Puget Sound, 80, Linfield’s Beau Slayton, 81, Auston Hilkin, PLU, 82, and Riley Conlin and Matt Kitto, Puget Sound, and Zack Kitchen, PLU, 83.
The top 10 individuals are separated by just six strokes, which makes for an exciting second and final round of the tournament on Monday.
Accuracy on the back nine was affected by heavy rain in the Puget Sound region, making it a tough finish for the golfers.
