SPOKANE, Wash. – In a matchup of two unbeaten league rivals, it was the Whitworth team that escaped with an unblemished record after defeating Linfield 5-4 in a key Northwest Conference matchup Friday evening at the Scotford Tennis Center.
The Pirates, who are defending conference champions, run their record to 5-0 in the Northwest Conference and 6-2 overall. The Wildcats slip to second place in conference standings with a 6-1 league record and 6-2 overall mark.
Linfield held an early lead after taking two of three doubles flights. No. 1 pair Abby Olbrich and Sarah Click defeated Whitworth’s Rachel Burns and Alli Marshall 9-8 (7-5). Sophie Larson and Caroline Brigham (Sr., Eagle, Idaho) teamed to get another Wildcat victory over Erica Bosman and Katie Staudinger 8-4.
The Pirates took the third doubles match as Megan Wingfield and Claire Hemming earned an 8-3 decision over Lexi Thomas and Sarah Watanabe.
Whitworth maintained momentum through singles play, sweeping the top four flights to secure the win.
Burns defeated Olbrich 6-2, 6-1 to open singles action. Bosman crushed Thomas 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 2 slot. Whitworth’s Marshall won over Larson 6-0, 6-3. In the key No. 4 flight, Staudinger narrowly topped Click 6-4, 6-3.
Brigham and Watanabe picked up the final singles matches for Linfield. Brigham maintained her perfect conference record with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Wingfield. Watanabe earned the No. 6 win over Hemming 6-3, 6-3.
NEXT: Linfield takes on Gonzaga in a nonconference match Saturday beginning at 9:30 a.m. The contest is to be held at the Spokane Racquet Club.
