Wildcats topple Bearcats at home

McMINNVILLE, Ore. – The Linfield women’s tennis club appears to be on cruise control, earning its sixth-straight conference victory with a 7-2 win over Willamette Saturday at the Linfield Tennis Center.

The Wildcats improve to 6-0 in the Northwest Conference and 6-1 overall. The Bearcats run their record to 4-3 in league action and 4-4 overall.

In a repeat of the title match of the USTA/ITA Women's Tennis Small College Northwest Regional in the fall, Willamette’s Natalia Agarycheva once again got the best of Abby Olbrich in the No. 1 singles match 6-4, 6-1.

Linfield swept the remaining singles matches to secure the victory.

No. 2 Lexi Thomas (Sr., Redding, Calif.) squeaked out a victory over Shannon Palmer 4-6, 7-5, 6-4. Sophie Larson picked up a win over Katie Huber 6-2, 6-2. At the No. 4 slot, Sarah Click defeated Sabrina Gutierrez 7-5, 6-2. Caroline Brigham (Jr., Eagle, Idaho) blanked Emily Bee 6-0, 6-0. Sarah Watanabe won the final singles match over Jamie Slonaker 6-1, 6-3.

Earlier in the day, Willamette also took the No. 1 doubles match as Agarycheva and Palmer defeated Click and Olbrich 8-6.

Larson and Brigham teamed to win the No. 2 doubles flight over Gutierrez and Slonaker 8-4. The Linfield duo of Watanabe and Thomas topped Bee and Huber 8-3.

NEXT: The ‘Cats travel to Spokane for a two-match road trip. Linfield plays Whitworth Friday at 3:30 p.m. and takes on Division-I program Gonzaga in a nonconference contest Saturday at 9:30 a.m.
