Linfield cruises to victory over Pacific

McMINNVILLE, Ore. – Winning all but one flight, the Linfield women’s tennis team maintained its place at the top of the Northwest Conference with a 8-1 victory over Pacific Friday night at the Linfield Tennis Center.

The ‘Cats (5-1, 5-0 NWC) topped the Boxers (1-2, 1-2 NWC) in five of six singles flights and all three doubles matches.

The No. 1 and No. 2 singles flights were the most hotly contested, both going to three sets. The Wildcats and Boxers split the pair.

Abby Olbrich picked up the victory in the top flight, defeating Cat Goya 7-6 (6-4), 3-6, 6-3. Pacific’s Megan Yoshimoto earned the sole win for the Boxers with a 7-5, 6-7 (6-3), 6-2 decision over Lexi Thomas (Sr., Redding, Calif.).

Linfield swept the remaining four singles flights. No. 3 Sophie Larson defeated Rachel Palmer 6-2, 6-1. Caroline Brigham (Jr., Eagle, Idaho) held a 6-4, 5-4 lead over Kelsey Trujillo until the match was called early. Sarah Watanabe crushed Kelsey Lack 6-1, 6-2 and Kiana Nip finished the evening with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Stephanie Velligas.

Earlier in the day, the ‘Cats won all three doubles flights.

Olbrich and Click teamed to top Goya and Yoshimoto 8-4. No. 2 players Larson and Brigham defeated Palmer and Velligas 8-3. Watanabe and Thomas completed the sweep for Linfield, beating Lack and Traci Mo 8-3.
