LEWISTON, Idaho – No. 8 Linfield suffered its first loss of the season, falling 5-0 to Saint Martin’s Saturday at the Guardian Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning Tournament hosted by Lewis-Clark State College.
The Wildcats slip to 5-1 as the Saints, a Division-II program, run their record to 2-8.
Saint Martin’s scored four runs in the top of the seventh to break open a scoreless tie. The biggest play of the inning came when Zach Leonard singled and a throwing error by the Linfield short stop allowed him to advance to second and two runners to score.
The Saints scored once more in the ninth to extend the lead to 5-0. Josh Grenier doubled to left center and then scored on a single from Sam Larsen.
Casey Mitchell pitched the shutout for the Saints, throwing 12 strikeouts and giving up just five hits.
Chris Mueller picked up the loss for the Wildcats. He pitched 6 1/3 innings, giving up three runs. Zach Manley (Sr., Coburg, Ore.) relieved him, earning five strikeouts in only 1 2/3 innings of work.
There was not much to speak of offensively for Linfield, which had averaged nine runs in its first five games. Clayton Truex (Jr., Kirkland, Wash.) was the lone bright spot at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a pair of singles.
Only three other ‘Cats registered hits: Dustin Smith, Kevin Allan and Danny Urness.
NEXT: Tournament play concludes with a Sunday matchup against host Lewis-Clark State at 12:30 p.m.
