McMINNVILLE, Ore. – All-star guard Stephen Wiseley delivered 25 points and added four steals to carry George Fox past Linfield 76-61 Friday night in a Northwest Conference men’s basketball game at Ted Wilson Gym.
Wiseley sank 8-of-17 shots from the field, including four 3-pointers, and was a perfect 5-for-5 at the free throw line on his way to top scoring honors.
George Fox (8-16, 6-9 NWC) completed a season sweep of Linfield (9-15, 5-10 NWC).
The Bruins outscored Linfield 41-29 in the second half, turning a narrow three-point advantage at the break into a lopsided victory on the road.
By the 10:41 mark of the second half, the Bruins had built their largest lead of the game, 59-48, on a jumper by Cole Whitehurst. Whitehurst finished with 15 points, five rebounds and three steals. Two other GFU starters – Mike Taylor (17 points) and Rich Smith (10) scored in double figures.
Linfield turned the ball over 19 times in the contest.
George Fox limited K.C. Wiser, the NWC’s leading scorer to 17 points on 8-of-19 shooting. Wiser came into the game averaging 23.4 points per contest.
With 1,545 career points in 89 games, Wiser moved into a tie for seventh on Linfield’s all-time scoring ladder. He shares the No. 7 spot with former sharpshooting guard Joel Holland, who reached his mark in 113 games from 1990-91 until 1994-95.
Wiseley scored 14 points to pace the Bruins to a 35-32 halftime advantage. GFU’s diminutive point guard connected on a trio of 3-pointers to help the Bruins take the upper hand in what was a see-saw first half. George Fox contained Wiser in the early going, limiting the all-star senior to two first-half baskets and four points in the opening 20 minutes.
In addition to Wiser, a four-year starter, Linfield honored two other graduating seniors in ceremonies prior to tipoff: Sergio Rosario played just one season as a Wildcat after transferring from Concordia-Portland, and guard Ryan Lobdell, a two-year letterman who got his collegiate start as a member of the junior varsity program.
NEXT: Linfield wraps up the 2010-11 season Saturday night in Tacoma, Wash. The Wildcats take on Pacific Lutheran at 8 p.m. inside Olson Auditorium.
