LEWISTON, Idaho – Despite trailing for the first time all season, the Wildcats prevailed 4-3 over Western Oregon Friday afternoon at the Lewis-Clark State tournament.
After the Wildcats (5-0) put up two runs to open the game, neither team scored again until the bottom of the sixth, when the Wolves (3-6) scored three to take a 3-2 lead.
The ‘Cats responded with a two-run final inning.
Pinch-hitter Clayton Truex (Jr., Kirkland, Wash.) hit a double to left field in the top of the ninth, scoring Cole Bixenman to tie the game at 3-3. Kevin Allan then doubled to right center field to bring home Truex for the game-winning run.
The Linfield defense got three straight outs, including two strikeouts, in the bottom of the ninth to secure the victory.
Ryan Larson picked up his second win of the season, giving up seven hits in six innings of work. He struck out six batters before being relieved by Evan Hilberg.
Grady Wood of Western Oregon nearly pitched a complete game, retiring 10 batters in 8 2/3 innings.
Offensively, Linfield outhit Western Oregon 8-6. Zach Boskovich went 1-for-3 with three RBI and Bixenman was 1-for-2 with one run scored.
NEXT: Tournament play continues as the Wildcats return to the field Saturday morning for a 10 a.m. matchup against St. Martin’s.
