PORTLAND, Ore. – Winning seven events, the Linfield men’s swim club earned its first win of the season, slipping past Lewis & Clark in a dual meet Friday night at the Zehntbauer Swimming Pavilion. The Pioneer women dominated the Wildcats to earn the split.
The final score on the men’s side was 104-96, and the women finished with a 161-43 score.
Lee Rivers (Jr., Renton, Wash.) and Miles Phillips (Sr., Richland, Wash.) were both double-event winners for Linfield. Rivers placed first in the 200 freestyle (1:50.60) and the 100 backstroke (57.74). Phillips was a top-three finisher in a trio of events, taking first in the 400 IM (4:36.56), first in the 500 freestyle (5:16.10) and second in the 100 butterfly (57.47).
Rivers was also a member of the winning 200 freestyle relay team, along with Brock Johns, Seth Iwamasa and Seth Ruwitch. The team finished more than 12 seconds ahead of second-place Lewis & Clark with a time of 1:34.21.
Johns, Iwamasa and Ruwitch had stellar individual efforts as well. Johns was second in the 100 freestyle (53.30). Iwamasa took first in the 100 butterfly (56.81) and third in the 200 freestyle (1:57.36). Ruwitch placed first in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:57.13) and second in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.86).
Other top-three performances came from Tyler Huynh, who was third in the 400 IM (5:00.41) and Marc Pereira, who was third in the 50 freestyle (23.78) and third in the 100 backstroke (1:04.22)
The Linfield women got strong showings from Megan Sandall (Sr., Bellevue, Wash.) and Catherine Nakamura (Sr., Mililani, Hawaii), who each placed second in their events. Sandall was second in the 200 freestyle (2:03.60) and the 500 freestyle (5:31.38). Nakamura was the runner-up in the 100 butterfly (1:04.52).
Three other Wildcats placed in the top three. Stephanie Longmate was third in the 1000 freestyle (11:24.67). Natalie Groat placed third in both the 100 butterfly (1:04.83) and the 500 freestyle (5:41.10). Rachel Codd (Sr., Seattle, Wash.) finished third in the 100 breaststroke (1:15.08).
