Missionaries drench 'Cats

Walla Walla, Wash. – Linfield swimmers posted some of their fastest times of the year, but ultimately fell to the Whitman clubs by the scores of 148-50 (women) and 148-54 (men) Friday night at Paul Harvey Pool.

The Missionary men remain undefeated in conference dual meets at 3-0, the women are 2-1 and both Wildcat teams fall to 0-3.

On the women’s side, Whitman’s score was bolstered with strong performances by Katie Chapman and Helen Jenne, who won two races each. The club also swept both relays.

Linfield’s strongest showing came in the 500-yard freestyle, in which the team placed two swimmers in the top three. Stephanie Longmate took first (5:36.94) and was followed closely by teammate Natalie Groat, who finished third (season-best 5:40.16).

Earlier in the meet, Longmate was second in the 1000 freestyle (11:48.66). Groat also scored points in the 100 butterfly, finishing third (1:04.03).

Other top performances for the Wildcats came from Megan Sandall (Sr., Bellevue, Wash.) and Catherine Nakamura (Sr., Mililani, Hawaii). Sandall was second in the 100 freestyle (57.56) and third in the 200 freestyle (2:05.36). Nakamura finished second in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.33).

Rachel Codd (Sr., Seattle, Wash.) also earned points for the ‘Cats, placing third in the 50 freestyle (27.64).

The Whitman men’s team also won both relays and had three double-event winners in Jamie Nusse, Chris Bendix and Paul Chang.

Linfield enjoyed top-three performances from seven different Wildcats, each posting some of their fastest times of the year.

Lee Rivers (Jr., Renton, Wash.) was the sole winner on the men’s side, winning the 100 backstroke with a season-best time of 57.33. He also took second in the 200 freestyle (season-best 1:50.50).

Teammate Miles Phillips (Sr., Richland, Wash.) had a solid night of his own, placing in the top three in all of his events. He was second in the 1000 freestyle (season-best 10:55.46), second in the 500 freestyle (5:22.05) and third in the 400 IM (season-best 4:49.31).

Five other Wildcats placed in the top three in their individual races. Jesse Archambault and Conor Colahan finished two-three in the 50 freestyle, each recording season-best times of 23.19 and 24.03, respectively.

Sean Iwamasa (Sr., Mililani, Hawaii) was third in the 100 butterfly (season-best 57.64), Brock Johns placed second in the 100 freestyle (season-best 52.24) and Marc Pereira was third in the 100 freestyle (season-best 53.16).

UP NEXT: The ‘Cats continue their road trip with a meet at Whitworth Saturday afternoon, starting at 1 p.m.
