Box Score

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Lindsey Gummersall (Soph., Seattle, Wash.) and Gretchen Owens (Soph., Glendale, Ore.) cashed in double-doubles, as Linfield rushed out to a 20-point halftime lead on its way to a convincing 76-67 win over Pomona-Pitzer Tuesday night at Voelkel Gymnasium.

The victory gave new Wildcats coach Casey Kushiyama his first career coaching victory and snapped a 13-game losing skid that dated back to the middle of the 2008-09 season.

Linfield caught fire in the first half, knocking down 20-of-44 attempts from the floor. On the defensive side of the ball, the ‘Cats held the Sagehens to just nine field goals in the first half, building a 52-32 advantage that was too much for Pomona-Pitzer to overcome.

Where the Wildcats did most of their damage was on the glass.

Linfield (1-2) outmuscled Pomona-Pitzer (0-2) in the paint, outrebounding the Sagehens 53-22. The ‘Cats crashed the backboards all evening, tallying 22 offensive rebounds. Seven Linfield players notched offensive boards with Gummersall grabbing five.

The ‘Cats also had the hot hand early from the perimeter. Linfield poured in seven 3-pointers during the first 20 minutes of play.

On a night when five players scored in double figures, Owens topped the Wildcats with 19 points, 10 rebounds and five assists. Gummersall scored 13 points to go along with a game-high 14 rebounds.

Nadra Evans (Sr., Astoria, Ore.) had a very efficient night, scoring 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting. Kelsey Forrest (Sr., Mossyrock, Wash.) and Brynna Fuller (Soph., Shelton, Wash.) each chipped in with 10 points apiece.

Pomona-Pitzer’s Deirdre Chew was the majority of the Saghens’ offense. Chew finished with a game-high 27 points on 6-of-9 shooting. Where Chew flourished was at the charity stripe, knocking down 13-of-17 free throw attempts.

Linfield shot 41.1 percent from the field while Pomona-Pitzer finished at 39.2 percent.

NEXT: Linfield has a short turnaround with a 7:30 game Wednesday night against host La Sierra.
