McMINNVILLE, Ore. – With several promising freshmen stealing the show, Puget Sound topped Linfield on both sides of a Northwest Conference dual meet Friday night at the Linfield Aquatics Center.
The Logger men won 110-81 over their Wildcat counterparts. The UPS women prevailed by a 138-67 count.
Loggers freshman Aleksander Jeremic topped Linfield’s Yusuke Kobayashi (Sr., Honolulu, Hawaii) in the 200 freestyle by three seconds, but Kobayashi returned the favor later on in the 200 butterfly, nipping Jeremic, 2:01.45 to 2:01.61.
Linfield senior All-American Dominic Rieniets (Sr., Sherwood, Ore.) was a double-event winner, taking both the 50-yard freestyle (22.49) and the 100 freestyle (49.01).
Another Loggers freshman, Maxwell Cohen, came away with a pair of individual wins. Cohen won the 200 breaststroke in 2:18.82 as well as the 500 freestyle (5:15.61).
The UPS women opened the meet with a 1-2-3 finish in the 1,000 freestyle as freshman Ann Barrington won the distance event in 11:2.36, just ahead of Molly Richardson (11:31.34) and Hanah Vernon (11:40.97).
For the Wildcats, newcomer Chrissy Baumgartner (Fr., Kenmore, Wash.) topped a field of seven other challengers in the 200 individual medley, winning in 2:15.87. Baumgartner went on to win the 200 backstroke in 2:15.05, just ahead of the Loggers’ Cait Farry’s time of 2:16.78. Steph Longmate led a 1-2 Linfield finish in the women’s 200 breaststroke, beating teammate Katie Main (Fr., Mill Creek, Wash.), 5:30.37 to 5:33.72.
COMING UP: Linfield returns to action Friday and Saturday at the Northwest Invitational hosted by Lewis & Clark. The multi-team event is the culmination of the early portion of the 2009-10 swimming schedule.
