SPOKANE, Wash. - In a showdown between the last two Northwest Conference men's swimmers of the year, Linfield's Dominic Rieniets (Sr., Sherwood, Ore.) out-touched Whitworth's Michael Woodward in the 50-yard freestyle (21.92 - 22.11), Woodward came back to win the 100-yard backstroke in 55.10 to hightlight a dual meet at the Whitworth pool.
The Pirates won both sides of the NWC dual, beating the Wildcat men by a 139-59 count and topping the women’s scoring 131-74.
Whitworth's men won the opening 200-yard medley relay in 1:39.72 and Linfield's men claimed the meet-ending 200 freestyle relay (1:30.71).
Whitworth star Rory Buck hit an NCAA "B" cut in the 100 breaststroke. Buck led a 1-2-3 Whitworth finish in the breaststroke with an NCAA provisional time of 57.91. He also won the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 52.60.
Linfield’s Yusuke Kobayashi (Sr., Honolulu, Hawaii) paced a 2-3-5 finish in the men ‘s 400 individual medley. Kobayashi clocked 4:36.01 behind Whitworth’s Kalen Darling (4:14.39). Wildcats freshman Miles Phillips (Fr., Richland, Wash.) was third in 4:39.70 and Seth Ruwitch (Fr., Canby, Ore.) was fifth in 4:43.71. Kobayashi also placed second behind Woodward in the 100 backstroke in 57.60.
On the women’s side, Linfield’s Chrissy Baumgartner (Fr., Kenmore, Wash.) won the 50 freestyle in 25.63 and was the runner-up in the 100 butterfly in 1:01.21. Baumgartner teamed with Catherine Nakamura (Fr., Mililani, Hawaii), Rhiannon Ladwig (Fr., Boise, Idaho) and Megan Sandall (Fr., Bellevue, Wash.) to win the 200 medley relay. Nakamura, a freshman, placed second in the 100 backstroke in 1:05.44, edging Whitworth’s Anna Case (1:05.46) by split seconds.
Sandall prevailed in the 100 breaststroke in 1:13.65 and Rachel Codd (Fr., Seattle, Wash.) was third in the same event (1:18.65).
Nakamura joined sister Christine Nakamura (Sr., Mililani, Hawaii), Adrienne Cheney (Soph., Newberg, Ore.) and Melany Krill (Soph., Beaverton, Ore) to earn third place in the 200 freestyle reley in 1:47.91.
Natlie Turner, the three-time NWC women's swimmer of the year, led the Pirate women's victory by winning the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:45.19, winning the 100-yard freestyle in 54.98 and leading off the winning 200 freestyle relay that finished in 1:41.91.
Ashley Lecoq was also a double winner for the Pirates, claiming the 200-yard freestyle in 2:00.42 and the 100-yard butterfly in 1:00.01.
