McMINNVILLE, Ore. – Lofting a shot from 30 yards away in the second overtime, Rennika Doty (Jr., McMinnville, Ore.) clinched a winning season for Linfield, its first since 2002, and the Wildcats stunned the visiting George Fox Bruins 3-2 Friday afternoon at the Linfield Soccer Field.

The Wildcats’ 10 wins represent the second-highest total in program history, trailing only the 13 victories recorded by the 2001 and 2002 teams.

With one match left to play, Linfield improved to 10-8-1 and 7-7-1 in the Northwest Conference. George Fox dropped to 7-12 and 4-11 in league play.

Wildcats forward Anna Sours (Fr., Jacksonville, Ore.) netted the game’s first goal, sending a high-arcing shot over the outstretched hands of Bruins goalkeeper Becka Doyle.

Linfield executed some pinpoint passing later the opening half, as MacKenzie Doty (Sr., McMinnville, Ore.) set up Rachel Miles (Jr., Hillsboro, Ore.) with a nifty lob pass. Miles then put a move on a flat-footed Doyle and pounded a shot into the open net at the 11:42 mark.

George Fox cut the margin to 2-1 just three minutes into the second half as Esther Harder collected a feed from Kirsten Cardwell and pushed the ball past Wildcats netminder Kelsey Hasselblad (Jr., Seattle, Wash.). Less than a minute later, the match was tied on Jordan Haselnus’ shot from 10 yards away. Cardwell assisted on the play.

The Wildcats had an opportunity to take the lead with 16 minutes remaining, but MacKenzie Doty’s header off a free kick bounded high over the cross bar. Rennika Doty watched another near miss go awry with two minutes left in regulation when she failed to plant a header in the net from five yards out.

The Bruins nearly ended the match four mintues into the second overtime, but Haselnus’ hard shot careened off the left post.

Shots on goal favored George Fox 12-5. The Wildcats held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.

NEXT: Linfield wraps up the 2009 season Saturday with a final NWC match at fourth-ranked Puget Sound, which clinche the NWC title Friday with a win over Pacific. George Fox hosts Pacific Lutheran in Newberg. Both matches start at 11 a.m.
