McMINNVILLE, Ore. - Landing the first punch in the form of a Kurtis Wong goal just 13 seconds into the match, Linfield steamrolled Willamette 5-1 Sunday afternoon at the Linfield soccer Field.
Linfield improves to 4-7-1 overall and 3-4 in Northwest Conference action. Willamette slumps to 3-9 overall and is now 2-5 in the conference.
Just 13 seconds into the match, Linfield celebrated a 1-0 lead. Michel Camacho raced down the sideline before lofting the ball into box. After a Willamette defender altered the path of the ball, Wong swooped in and fired a shot into the back of the net.
With a one-goal lead, Linfield’s defense proved stellar the rest of the way. In the 16th minute, Cody Tipton made the save of the season. After a cross was kicked into the box, the Bearcats headed the ball twice, the last of which a shot attempt by Erik Kaufman. With little time to react, Tipton extended to his left and knocked the ball out.
Linfield got its second goal on a Nick Powers score in the 25th minute. Willamette goalkeeper Eben Hellekson tipped out a cross into the box, but Powers found a crease and put back the deflection for a score.
Trailing 2-0, Willamette did not pose any serious threat after defender Etienne Galbreath was ejected from the match in the 36th minute. The Bearcats were forced to play a man down the rest of the way.
Colin Bebee added his first goal of the season in the 52nd
minute off an assist by Danny Snelgrow
(Sr., Honolulu, Hawaii). Carter Elhabbassi and Gabi Del Rayo tacked on late goals to wrap up the scoring.
