SPOKANE, Wash. - Linfield's Tyler Nelson (Sr., Spokane, Wash.) took home his fourth-straight tournament victory and Whitworth upended Linfield by three strokes to win the Whitworth Invitational Monday at Spokane Country Club.

For the first time in the fall season, Linfield failed to capture the team title. The Wildcats finished the tournament with a combined two-round total of 613, falling just behind the 610 score that was turned in by the Pirates.

Coming into Monday’s final round, Wildcats sophomore Alex Fitch (Soph., Redmond, Ore.) led the field with a one-over-par 73 but was overtaken by Nelson in the second round.

Nelson shot a dazzling 69 on the par-72 course to erase a five-stroke deficit on his way to his fourth-straight tournament crown. Fitch finished the invitational in a third-place tie with Whitworth’s Christian Boudreau at 151.

Yutaro Sakamoto (Jr., Mountain View, Calif.) was the third Wildcat to place in the top 10, finishing in an eighth-place tie. Sakamoto ended the tournament at 156, 12 strokes over par.

The 6,663-yard course played extremely hard as only five players came in with scores that were at 152 or below.

Scott Zhang played a consistent tournament, shooting a second-round score of 75 for Pacific Lutheran that was good enough to edge Fitch for second place.

Trailing Whitworth by five strokes entering Monday’s play, Linfield trimmed the difference to two strokes but  then was unable to steal the win.

Following Whitworth and Linfield were George Fox at 643, Pacific at 644, Whitman 649 and PLU rounding off the field at 650.

NEXT: Linfield competes in the NWC Fall Classic at Heron Lakes Golf Course starting Saturday, Oct. 17. The outcome of the Fall Classic counts one fourth toward determining the 2009-10 team champion.
