McMINNVILLE, Ore. - Blasting the field with a 38-stroke win, Linfield took home the team title of the Linfield Invitational Sunday afternoon at Michelbook Country Club. Tyler Nelson (Sr., Spokane, Wash.) won his third tournament of the season while Yutaro Sakamoto (Jr., Mountain View, Calif.) and Alex Fitch (Soph., Redmond, Ore.) rounded out the top three.
The win gives Linfield its third team title of the fall season. The Wildcats shot a six-over-par 582 for the weekend on the 6,572 yard, par-72 course.
After dialing in a 290 on the first day of competition, Linfield impressed again with a 292 during the final round. The sub-300 rounds were the only two of the tournament.
Nelson, one of the top NCAA Division III golfers in the nation, was the only player to finish the tournament below par, shooting a glossy six under. No player has come within three stokes of Nelson in any of his three tournaments.
Sakamoto shot even to finish in second place with Fitch right behind him at two shots over par. Joel Rychard (Sr., Bend, Ore.) finished in eighth place at 10 shots over par.
Corban came in second place, finishing the two-day tournament at 44 shots over par. Joey Duwe paced the Warriors with a three shots over par performance that was good for fourth place. Duwe’s two under par 70 Sunday was the best score of the final round.
Following Corban came Pacific Lutheran, Oregon and Concordia. The Lutes shot 51 over par, the Ducks 82 over par and the Cavaliers 88 over par.
Blake Blakey of Concordia, Zach Chinn of Oregon and Kyle Spitzer of PLU tied for fifth place at nine shots over par.
NEXT: Linfield travels to Spokane Saturday to play in the Whitworth Invitational at Spokane Country Club.
