Fellows uses her noggin to lead 'Cats over Pirates
Box Score

SPOKANE, Wash. – Emily Fellows (Sr., Portland, Ore.) scored twice within the opening 22 matches of action to lift 20th-ranked Linfield to a shutout victory over Whitworth in Northwest Conference women’s soccer action Saturday afternoon at the Whitworth soccer field.

With the win, the Wildcats improved to 8-0 overall and 4-0 against league opponents. The Pirates slipped to 5-3-1 overall, 2-2-2 in NWC action.

Its typically offensive-minded self, Linfield came out attacking nearly from the opening touch. Tegan Grunwald (Jr., Philomath, Ore.) fired off a wide shot just 69 seconds into the match, and spurred Whitworth goalkeeper Andrea Stump into action only three minutes later with a more accurate look at the net.

The Wildcats continued to bombard the Pirate defensive end, but it wasn’t until the third corner kick of the match – in the 16th minute – that the visitors struck gold. Emma Vukic (Jr., Bainbridge Island, Wash.) served the ball into the box to Fellows, who headed the ball into the net for her conference-leading ninth goal of the season.

Fellows tacked on another score late in the 22nd minute on another header, lifting a cross from Ellie Schmidt (Sr., Dundee, Ore.) over Stump for a 2-0 Wildcat lead.

Stump kept busy the remainder of the match, making several acrobatic saves, eight in total, to keep her Whitworth offense within two goals. But scoring opportunities were limited. The Pirates were outshot 19-1 for the match, and did not earn a single corner kick.

With the Linfield back line preventing any serious advancement of the Whitworth offense, Kallina Haase made just one save all afternoon to earn her sixth win and second shutout of her Wildcat career. She stopped Jami Hegg’s attempt – the only Pirate shot of the match – in the 82nd minute.
