Linfield, Willamette settle for first tie of 2012
Box Score

SALEM, Ore. – Willamette held Linfield’s high-octane offense without a goal for 110 minutes, forging a tie between the two Northwest Conference rivals 0-0 in double overtime Saturday afternoon at Sparks Field.

A stellar defensive effort by Bearcat keeper Nicole Price kept the Wildcats off the board despite the visitors putting 13 shots on frame. Price's biggest stops occurred in the 30th minute, when she saved a penalty kick attempted by Linfield’s Emily Fellows (Sr., Portland, Ore.) as well as the follow-up shot from the NWC's leading scorer.

In all, the Wildcats (7-1-1, 3-1 NWC) outshot the Bearcats (3-5-1, 1-3-1 NWC) 25-7 and won triple the number of corner kicks (9-3) but could not push the ball past Willamette’s final line of defense as both clubs finished in a tie for the first time all season.

Linfield had two great opportunities to score in the first overtime period, earning virtually back-to-back two corners. Yet neither set piece resulted in a goal. Willamette recorded a team save on the first, blocking a shot from Stephanie Socotch, and the Wildcats were called offside on the second.

Price came up with another clutch stop for the Bearcats in the closing seconds of the first overtime to preserve the clean sheet.

The teams combined for just three shots in the second overtime, but none were on target.

Fellows took a match-high six shots for Linfield, five of which were on target. Willamette’s Veronica Ewers was one of just five Bearcats to take aim at the goal, taking a total of three shots, including the final attempt of the match.

For her part, Taylor Collinsworth made three saves, including a late second-half try by Ashland Bernard in the 83rd minute.

UP NEXT: Linfield heads up the I-5 corridor to take on Lewis & Clark. Match time in Portland is set for noon Sunday.
