Scoring spurts lift Bruins past Wildcats

NEWBERG, Ore. – Four successive goals late in the first half propelled George Fox to a commanding lead, and the Bruins maintained the momentum from there on the way to dealing Linfield a 15-5 setback Tuesday night at Austin Sports Complex.
Early goals by Halee Helgerson and Shelby Duarte kept the Wildcas in the contest through the first 21 minutes before the home-standing Bruins produced four straight goals by four different players to open up an 8-2 advantage.
With the Bruins owning a 9-3 lead to begin the second half, Alex Nakashimada scored twice and assisted on another tally, part of a four-goal run that salted the match away.
Duarte scored two of her team-high four goals in a 4½-minute span of the second period on plays set up by Helgerson and Kelsey Dammarell.
Nakashimada finished with a match-high six goals and Christine Doherty added four more for George Fox, which improved to 5-9 for the season.
Defensively, Rebecca Kropp caused three turnovers and scooped three ground balls, Madilyn Bechtel contributed another three ground balls. Erika Phillipo made 14 saves in net for the ‘Cats.
NEXT: Linfield (2-12) heads to Pacific Friday night to battle the Boxers at Lincoln Park. Game time is set for 6 o'clock.
