Athenas hamstring Wildcats
Box Score
McMINNVILLE, Ore. – A commanding 14-0 and four-goal output by Anthea Weixel in the first half of play propelled the visiting Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athenas over the Linfield Wildcats 19-3 Thursday at Linfield's lacrosse field.

Weixel led all scorers with six goals, while Cara Cancelmo, Izzy Laterzo and Zoe Pinczower all had three scores each for the Athenas (6-3).  As for Linfield, captain Shelby Duarte (Jr., San Ramon, Calif.) contributed two and Halee Helgerson (Jr., Milwaukie, Ore.) added a third.

The scoring started immediately for Claremont-Mudd-Scripps when Cancelmo weaved her way through the Wildcats defense, scoring just 25 seconds into the match.

Goals began to accumulate like rainwater in a storm drain as the Athenas scored 10 times in just the first 10 minutes of the contest.

The Athenas defense held its ground also, not allowing Duarte, Linfield's scorer, to touch the ball until the 20:09 minute mark.

Hana Gould (Jr., Portland, Ore.) for the Wildcats picked up her first red card of the season, retaliating after she was knocked to the ground in a scrum for a ground ball.

C-M-S kept the pressure on the home team, adding four more goals in the last 15 minutes of the half.

The Athenas were up 14-0 at the half. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps shot the ball 26 times compared with Linfield's five. Linfield's Erika Phillipo (So., Eugene, Ore.) made nine saves in the period.

Duarte put an end to the Athenas' 16-0 scoring run when she spun around a defender and buried the ball in the back of the net for Linfield's first goal. Duarte scored another off a soft touch pass into a pocket of space by Helgerson, finishing it calmly for her second goal with 7:30 remaining.

Helgerson added one more tally after that, but was not enough to overcome the dominant Athenas.

The visitors outshot the Wildcats 36-12. C-M-S earned important hustle points by picking up 33 ground balls to Linfield's 20. Each team turned the ball over 14 times.
