Slow start dooms Wildcats in 19-4 loss

McMINNVILLE, Ore. – Scoring the first 10 goals of the match, Pacific rolled to a decisive 19-4 victory over Linfield on a chilly Wednesday night at the Linfield lacrosse field.

Carmen Taplin scored five goals, Melanie Niehus and Kaitlyn Harper each potted four scores and Amy Mayhugh added three more for the Boxers, who prevailed in their season opener.

Linfield senior Brittani Drost scored three of the Wildcats’ four goals. Shelby Duarte scored the Wildcats' only other goal on a feed from Halee Helgerson (Sr., Milwaukie, Ore.).

The Boxers outshot the host Wildcats 26-3 in the opening half of action and forced 20 Linfield turnovers during the opening 30 minutes.

Taplin netted five of the Boxers’ first seven points – all in the first 11 minutes of play.

Defensively, the Wildcats’ Rebecca Kropp (Sr., Beaverton, Ore.) forced four Boxer turnovers while Helgerson, Shelby Duarte and Lynette Cole each created two.

Wildcats goalkeeper Kaleigh Phillips, filling in for injured starter Erika Phillipo (Jr., Eugene, Ore.), was credited with seven saves.

The loss dropped the Wildcats to 0-2 for the season.

AHEAD: After a week to recoup, the Wildcats host three out-of-region contests in succession. Smith College of Northhampton, Mass., pays a visit on St. Patrick’s Day before the ‘Cats host Allegheny (Meadville, Pa.) March 18 at 6 p.m. The following day, North Central (Naperville, Ill.) is the guest for a 6 p.m. match.
