McMINNVILLE, Ore. – Grace Reid scored four goals and set up three other tallies to power Puget Sound past Linfield 19-4 in the season-opening women’s lacrosse match Sunday afternoon on the Linfield lacrosse field.
Reid scored twice in the game’s opening 5:18, part of a 7-0 run by the Loggers that forced the Wildcats to play catch up the rest of the way.
Senior attacker Brittani Drost broke through with the Wildcats’ first goal at the 12:09 mark of the first half on a feed from Lynette Cole.
The Loggers then scored the next nine goals consecutively, including two each from Kerri Smith and Julia Schulman.
Linfield notched a pair of goals in two-minute span of the second half, first on a weaving effort by Shelby Duarte on an assist from Chas Tittle, then an unassisted point by Halee Helgerson that made the score 16-3 with 10:38 to play. Nicole Thoens scored Linfield’s final goal with less than 10 minutes remaining.
Final statistics favored the visitors with UPS outshooting Linfield 42-14.
Wildcats goalkeeper Erika Phillipo was credited with 10 saves in her collegiate debut.
CAT SCRATCH: Linfield's two graduating seniors - Drost and Cole - were honored for their dedication to the program during a special pregame ceremony at midfield. . . the match marked the coaching debut of former Wildcat Sammy Smith, who starred at Linfield from 2006 until 2009.
