'Cats win second straight, dump Bearcats
McMINNVILLE, Ore. – Playing the first match on their outdoor courts, the Linfield Wildcats defeated the Willamette Bearcats 8-1 on Sunday at the Linfield Tennis Center.
The win was the second consecutive for the Wildcats and improves their overall record to 4-7 and Northwest Conference record to 3-5.
In doubles competition, the Wildcats swept the Bearcats in all three matches.
At No. 1 Tyler Linscott (Sr., Tucson, Ariz.) and Ben McNair (Jr., Corvallis, Ore.) beat Aaron Schechter and Gunnar Lee 8-3. At No. 2, Charlie Farrenkopf (Sr., Lake Oswego, Ore.) and Nathan Saragoza (So., Lodi, Calif.) downed Colin Fisher and Hunter Yee 8-4.
Jose Luis Rojas (Fr., Mexico City, Mexico) and John Lutaaya (Fr., Kampala, Uganda) prevailed over Derek Lund and Douglas Hochmuth by an 8-3 count at No. 3 to secure the doubles sweep for the Wildcats.
Linfield's success continued in singles, where the Wildats dropped only one match.
Linscott recorded a decisive 6-1, 6-3 victory over Lee at No. 1, while Rojas battled with Schechter at No. 2 for a 6-3, 6-4 win.
At No. 3 Saragoza defeated Hochmuth 6-1, 7-5. Jacob Mangan (So., Klamath Falls, Ore.) stepped into No. 5 singles to record a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Lund. Farrenkopf captured the final singles victory for the Wildcats by beating Fisher 6-2, 6-0 at No. 6.
Yee was the only victor for the Bearcats with a win over Lutaaya at No. 4. Yee jumped out to a first set victory, but Lutaaya battled back to capture a second set victory before Lee prevailed for a 6-3, 3-6, 10-8 win.
NEXT: The Wildcats travel to Texas for a match against Southwestern University at Marvin D. Henderson Sr. Tennis Courts beginning Saturday at 9 a.m. CT.
