SEATTLE, Wash. – Linfield kicked off the 2017 season on Sunday against Division I Seattle University at Sand Point Tennis Center in Seattle's east suburbs.

Using Division I rules, Seattle won all three doubles matches to take the doubles point and a one-point lead heading into singles.

The Wildcats top tandem of Tyler Linscott (Sr., Tucson, Ariz.) and Ben McNair (Jr., Corvallis, Ore.) lost 7-6 (3) to Trenton Nield and Matt Alderson, while the newly formed duo of Nathan Saragoza (So., Lodi, Calif.) and Trent Prussing (So., Richland, Wash.) fell 6-3 to John Stormans and Michael Schoettler at No. 2. In the third flight freshmen Jose Luis Rojas (Fr., Mexico City, Mexico) and John Lutaaya (Fr., Kampala, Uganda) dropped a 6-2 decision to Jeremiah Kalmus and Arshak Ghazaryan.

In singles, Linscott battled at the top singles spot, falling 6-2, 6-4 to Nield. Jacob Mangan (So., Klamath Falls, Ore.) lost by an identical 6-2, 6-4 score at No. 6.

"Despite losing the match, I liked the way we came out and competed in doubles today,” said Wildcats coach Ben Belletto. “The guys came out aggressively from the start and gave us chances to win. We definitely looked like it was the first match of the season, but we'll get a ton sharper as the season progresses. I was impressed with the way everyone came out, especially at one doubles. Tyler competed better as his singles match went on, as did Jake."

COMING UP: Linfield dives straight into Northwest Conference play with counting matches over the coming weekend. Saturday, the Wildcats host Puget Sound before squaring off with George Fox on Sunday at the Linfield Tennis Center. Both matches are set to begin at 1 p.m.
